I think for the most part, the "mid-Pacific gas station" value of Guam falls secondary to its benefit as America's western-most territory. As the official on the PBS report says, it's presence that is emphasized. You can't very well have a presence in the Pacific if you're in California (or maybe you can?). Guam affords that possibility.

Still, the argument that Guam is just a gas station is inaccurate, outdated, and like you said, overrated.

Had this been in any town in the U.S., I wonder what the response would have been.

all prognostications aside, this troop movement is only the tourniquet to a reccuring problem - US presence in over 150 different countries ( over 760 foreign installations).

Troop accomodation on such an already crowded island should not be a hardship that these islanders have to endure. The overwhelming disregard to the chamorros' precedent well being is reminiscent of early native american relations and one can almost detect shades of imperialism in it. (the sheer stupidity of this move rates the hyperbole)

Guam's strategic value as mid pacific gas station is wholly overrated, since the advent of self sustaining, long-range aircraft and the ability of mobile carriers to support them.

The fact that anger exists is of no suprise. Yet another major chip in the oxidating armor of the Great United States has been made; yet another problem swept under the rug.

Sigh.

Excellent! I won't comment on the state of what is going on right now because its pretty much obvious. I will comment on the article itself which I found very concise and informational. Enough to get any mainstream reader, who may know nothing about Guam, interested in checking further into the issue(s).
Good job!

This is an excellent report on the situation that gently touches on most, if not all the different aspects, or situations regarding the military plans for Guam.

Yes, Guam needs the boost and hopefully more of it outside the base, but all that is asked is that we protect the people, the culture, the land and the resources that make Guam our island home.

I just hope our local leaders do not squander all the benefits for the elite few and leave those mostly in need without.

If only the federal government can ensure that the benefits will be equally shared with all, maybe the locals will support this move without too much opposition???

I loved your writing style,
but i hope that the view people get from Arabs/Muslims is not that. Muslims are often misunderstood on their religion because of the education MANY people lack.

Glad everything worked out for your family and best of luck :) UAE....is the best place on EARTH, me being born there, it's a definite thumbs up :)

I'm afraid (and embarrassed for being part of the cynical generation that joked about it) that Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" was just another fad.

But I hope we, as well as our world leaders, don't wait until the wrath of global warming takes on a "2012" -esque course before we decide to react to the state of our environment!
